  • Does TATA AIG student travel insurance is accepted by the overseas university?
Yes, Tata AIG currently insures around 10,000 students who are travelling to different countries to pursue their higher education. Most Universities around the world do accept Tata AIG’s Student Insurance plans if they meet their minimum health insurance requirements of the state/country in which the University is located. There University generally puts out a list of benefits that need to be part of the student’s insurance plan and if the Tata AIG plan covers these benefits, the student can go ahead with purchasing the insurance policy.

  • I am going on F1 visa? Which plan is suitable for me?

Tata AIG’s Student Guard Product currently has 5 different plans based on the Accident & Sickness Sum Insured (Plan A has SI of $50,000 to Supreme with SI of $500,000) and all these plans are suitable if you are travelling on a F1 visa. However the student needs to first understand what the insurance requirements of the University are before opting for a particular plan. Based on the Sum Insured requirement (health insurance requirement as it is normally called), the student can choose the optimum plan from the table below...

Coverage in USDPlan APlan BUltimateUltimate PlusSupreme
    Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses Reimbursement (Deductible)$50,000 (100)$1,00,000 (100)$2,50,000 (100)$5,00,000 (100)$5,00,000 (100)

Even if there is a defined Sum Insured requirement of the University, it is advisable that the Student opts for either the Ultimate Plus or Supreme plans (with SI of $500,000) given the cost of medical treatment in the USA.

  • I am going for research in foreign university? Can I get TATA AIG student travel insurance for myself and my spouse?
Yes, if you meet the requirements of the Student Insurance plan (age between 16 and 35 years on the date of travel) and are going abroad for research (which can be categorised as advance studies), you ‘can opt for the Tata AIG Student Insurance plan. If your spouse is also going abroad to pursue her studies she can opt for a separate Student Insurance plan. If your spouse is however not travelling abroad for higher education, you will then need to opt for a regular insurance plan for him/her. You can opt for Tata AIG’s Travel Guard plan for your spouse’s travel.

  • What is the cost of TATA AIG student travel insurance?
Tata AIG’s Student Insurance plan called Student Guard is an insurance policy that any student between the ages of 16-35 can purchase while travelling abroad to pursue their higher studies at a foreign College/University. Today insurance coverage is available at competitive premiums primarily depending on i) Destination Country that the student is going to; ii) Duration of policy required (1 or 2 years) and iii) Sum Insured (coverage value) opted for.

Tata AIG’s Student Guard policies are very competitively priced when compared to the insurance plans offered to the student by the College/University. (For example for a 25 year old student going to USA for higher studies for a period of 1 year (365 days), the insurance premium for a 365 policy is around ₹44,000 for the whole year – this is for a coverage of USD $500,000 which is around ₹3.50 cr for Accident & Sickness. If we take the average cost of 1 years fee to be around ₹15,00,000, then the insurance premium contribution is less than 3%.) These premiums will be even lower when the student is visiting any other country in Europe, UK, Australia, Asia etc.). It is important to note that apart from Accident & Sickness the plans also have many relevant benefits for students like Compassionate Visit, Sponsor Protection, Study Interruption, Cancer Screening & Mammography, Maternity Coverage etc.

Students should ideally compare the Indian Insurance plans vis-à-vis what the College/University is offering before making a decision. Indian Insurance plans also offer cashless treatment if the student is seeking inpatient treatment for an accident or sickness. If the student is indeed travelling with an Indian Student insurance plan, and the College/University needs an Insurance waiver form to be submitted, the same can be provided by the India insurer. Hence it is strongly recommended that every student buys a student insurance policy before leaving India.

  • Can I cancel the policy if my university does not accept the TATA AIG student insurance? Is there any time limit?
Yes, the Tata AIG Student Guard plan can be cancelled and the insured can seek a refund if the University is not accepting the insurance policy of Tata AIG. It is preferable that the student cancels the policy at the earliest given opportunity, but atleast within a month. The refund will be made on a pro rata basis. However if the student has registered a claim under any section of the policy before they have chosen to cancel the policy, Tata AIG reserves the right to not cancel the policy and hence no refund will be applicable/paid to the customer.

  • How do I get University waiver insurance form?
The University waiver form is generally available with the University and will need to be filled and submitted along with the insurance policy when the student is getting enrolled in the University. The process followed at the time of enrolment is that the University will insist on reviewing the insurance policy as part of the documents that the student submits. If the coverages of the insurance plan meet the Minimum Health requirements of the University, they will request the student o submit the Insurance waiver form duly signed by the insurance company. So the student will need to fill in the form and submit the same to Tata AIG, who will sign the form and hand it over to the student who can submit it to the University.
